Option - MOD-IFIE3-G-S-RTB-C1 : GIPSI : Rhetoric&Technical Debating

Descriptif

The course is divided into two distinct parts.
General Debating.
During the first part of the course the students are introduced to basic rhetorical devices such as logos, pathos, rhetorical questioning ... The teacher uses videos to show the rhetorical devices being used by famous speakers such as Steve Jobs, Obama, Oprah Winfery etc. Students are encouraged to use the techniques during the general debates.
Technical Debating.
During the second part of the course the debates will focus on technical subjects defined by the students with input from technical teachers (eg. Nuclear Energy, Fracking, Smart-grids...). The second part of the course is jointly run by English teachers (who provide feedback on language & communication elements) and technical teachers (who provide feedback on the technical arguments used.)

The student is able to :
i) Use a wide range of rhetorical devices to deliver a persuasive speech
ii) Align their message, their voice and their body language while delivering a speech
iii) Defend/attack arguments based on their technical field
