Tronc Commun - MOD-M-AeroM-M&P2-3 : Surface engineering

Descriptif

Surface Engineering

The courses based on "Surface Engineering" are made up of two constituent elements based on dry “corrosion + high temperature corrosion + thermal Barriers” and “tribology and surface treatments”.

The teachers in the different parts of the course are:

Aqueous corrosion: John HENSHAW (Tulsa University - USA)

Dry corrosion: Damien TEXIER (ICAA)

Thermal barriers: John NICHOLLS (UNIVERSITY OF CRANFIELD-UK)

Tribology: Christine BOHER (IMT Mines Albi),

Surface treatments: Pascal LAMESLE (IRTM2P-METZ)

Objectifs pédagogiques

The aim of the courses based on "Surface Engineering" is to study the properties of surfaces, to understand their interactions with the physical or chemical environment and to understand their damages under mechanical stresses.

    Programme détaillé

-A- TRIBOLOGY & SURACE TREATMENT: Ch. Boher IMT Mines Albi
The objective of this course is to make future engineers aware of friction and wear to quickly identify what type of wear (surface damage under friction). The concepts discussed are
    - Contact mechanics
    - Tribology surfaces
    - Wear mechanisms and concept of the tribological triplet and the 3rd body
    - Friction models (Coulomb, Tresca, ....)
    - Solution to minimise wear damage swith surface treatments
    -B- CORROSION
B.1-: Damage of surfaces by aqueous corrosion and protection methods,
    - Thermodynamic aspect.
    - Kinetic aspect.
    - Experimental study of corrosion reactions.
    - Main corrosion mechanisms.
    B.2: High temperature corrosion
    - Basics of oxidation / corrosion of metallic materials (thermodynamic aspects, kinetics of growth of oxide layers),
    - Complex atmospheres and corrosion (electrochemical aspects, mechanisms of hot corrosion),
    - Mechanical aspects (growth constraints, thermal constraints, cyclic oxidation), Case study, Lifetime modeling.
    B.3: Thermal barriers
Development and application of coatings to protect sensitive parts in turbo-machines and isolate them from “external” aggressions such as gases and very high temperatures
