Tronc Commun - MOD-M-ADPH-PhPcsDe-SCPrc : Liquid-solid processes

Descriptif

Different Liquid-solid processes used in pharmaceutical industries are presented: crystallization, solvent extraction, membrane separation processes.

Objectifs pédagogiques

The objectives are given for each parts

Crystallization
At the end of this part, the students will be able to:
- understand the phenomena involved in a crystallization
- know how to write mass balance (solute/solid) in a crystallization operation and to calculate or temperature or anti-solvant addition profile

Solvent extraction
At the end of this module, the student will understood and will be able to explain the following main concepts:
- 3 components phase equilibrium diagrams
- General concept for mass transfer unit operations (Ideal stages, operating lines...). Kinetic limitations and theirs effects on separation
- Different ways to perform separation processes (single contact, cross-current and counter-current contactors)
The student will be able to:
- use the three components equilibrium diagrams
- write the mass balances
- choose the contact mode
- design a multistage separation device (liquid-liquid and solid-liquid extraction)
- know how to propose a contactor technology.

Membrane separation processes
At the end of this part, the students will be able:
-To expose students to fundamental and technological aspects of membrane separation processes, with particular emphasis on applications that may be useful in processing and in utilities management in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
-To introduce the main scientific aspects involving current commercial separation processes
-To draw attention to the correlation membrane structure and transport properties
-To introduce basic aspects of membrane svstems design and operation, including membrane module configurations and feed pre-treatment
-To motivate students to propose their own solution to particular separation problems.

Solvent extraction

How is assessed that the objectives have been reached?
- by verifying during tutorials the personal work
- by a student personal assessment based on on-line exercises
- by a short written examination at the end of the term
How does your assessment system help the student to reach the objectives?
This evaluation system allows every student to review continuously the state of its knowledge and its appropriation of the subject.

Membrane separation processes
a) A quizz with a list of 11 exercises including an example of a request proposal for an industrial problem is handed out to the students ; they have to select 8 questions and hand back solutions the next day for class discussion.
b) A list of 5 research scientific/technological papers, ineluded review papers, is proposed and preliminarv discussed with the students. Each one is to select paper, to read critically and to orally present and discuss in the final class
Each of these activities is graded.
