Descriptif

I. CV & Cover Letters - Short Module
This module builds on the theoretical knowledge the student acquired in the Professional Development teaching unit.
Students receive coaching on writing CVs, cover letters and online applications.
Teachers use role plays to simulate internship interviews & give feedback to students.
II. Engineering Science
This module relies on Problem-based learning (PBL) : a student-centered approach in which students learn about a subject by working in groups to solve an open-ended problem.
Different Steps :
Examine and define the problem.
Explore what students already know about underlying issues related to it. Determine what students need to learn and where they can acquire the information and tools necessary to solve the problem.
Evaluate different possible ways to solve the problem.
Report on their findings.
In groups students select a particular issue in a technical field. The groups take it in turns to run a class based on the issue they have chosen and provide other students with knowledge about the issue as well as language input (technical vocabulary, listening exercises)
III. Development Engineering Project
Student awareness of complexity of challenge of reducing poverty - view film 'Living on a Dollar a Day"
Contrast Foreign Aid (Top Down) approach with Humanitarian Engineering (Bottom Up) approach.
Debates organized to explore pros and cons of these two approaches
In-depth study of selected country (economic, social, environmental dimensions)
Examine case studies of existing Development projects. (text, audio, video)
Focus on 'rugged' solutions / 'Jugaad'
Select appropriate technical solution to the target issue. (focus on technical vocabulary)
Identify ways to deploy selected technology. (focus on vocabulary relating to logistics, finance, supply-chain...)
This course draws on previous knowledge gained in L3 (cross cultural communication, ethics) as well as using creativity techniques from Design Thinking (M1) and the courses in economics.
